Taping and strapping involve applying adhesive tapes to the skin in specific patterns to achieve therapeutic benefits. Depending on your needs, we utilise different types of tape and application methods:
Rigid Taping (Athletic Taping):
What it is: A strong, non-stretch tape applied firmly to restrict unwanted movement, provide strong support, and protect joints or ligaments.
When we use it: Commonly for acute sprains (e.g., ankle sprains, knee ligament injuries), joint instability, or to provide strong external support during the early stages of recovery or for return to sport.
Benefits: Excellent for immediate pain relief by offloading injured structures, preventing excessive movement, and providing confidence.
Kinesiology Taping (K-Tape):
What it is: An elastic, breathable tape designed to mimic the elasticity of skin and muscles. It’s applied with varying degrees of stretch.
When we use it: Used to facilitate or inhibit muscle activity, reduce swelling and bruising (by lifting the skin to create space), improve circulation, and provide proprioceptive feedback (body awareness) without severely restricting movement.
Benefits: Supports muscles, reduces swelling, can decrease pain, and allows for a fuller range of motion compared to rigid taping, making it ideal for ongoing activity.
Pain Relief: By offloading stressed tissues or supporting painful areas.
Enhanced Joint Stability: Providing external support to weakened or injured ligaments and joints.
Reduced Swelling & Bruising: Kinesiology tape can help promote lymphatic drainage.
Improved Muscle Function: K-tape can help activate weak muscles or relax overused ones.
Injury Prevention: Providing prophylactic support during high-risk activities.
Proprioceptive Feedback: Increasing your awareness of joint position and movement, which aids motor control.
Confidence Boost: Helping you feel more secure when returning to activity after injury.
Faster Return to Activity: By managing symptoms and providing support.
Conditions Often Benefiting from Taping & Strapping:
Taping and strapping can be an effective component of treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, including:
Ankle Sprains: Providing stability and reducing swelling.
Knee Injuries: Ligament support (ACL, MCL, LCL), patellofemoral pain, tendinopathies.
Shoulder Instability: Supporting the joint during movement.
Wrist & Thumb Pain: De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sprains.
Back & Neck Pain: For postural support or to offload specific muscles.
Plantar Fasciitis / Foot Arch Pain: Providing arch support and offloading the plantar fascia.
Shin Splints: Supporting the muscles and reducing stress on the shin bone.
Muscle Strains: Hamstring, calf or quad strains for support during healing.
Your physiotherapist at Physio Fitness will first conduct an assessment to determine if taping or strapping is appropriate for your condition and to select the most effective type of tape and application method.
Assessment: Your therapist will identify the specific goals for the tape (e.g., pain reduction, stability, swelling control).
Skin Preparation: The area will be cleaned to ensure good adhesion.
Application: The tape will be applied expertly in specific patterns tailored to your anatomy and needs.
Instructions: You’ll receive clear instructions on how long to keep the tape on, how to remove it, and any precautions.
Integrated Care: Taping is always used as an adjunct to your broader physiotherapy programme, which includes manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, and advice.
EXCELLENT Based on 66 reviews Posted on Jo Greenfield04/03/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Sergio at Physio Fitness was absolutely fantastic. He really understood the issues with Mias ankle - and subsequently knee - and made a difference to her movement to the level where she was back on the netball court far quicker than we could have hoped. On top of it he is a really lovely guy and a pleasure to deal with - would recommend to anyonePosted on Elan Mansur20/02/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Saw Thomas for a number of weeks to deal with a nasty mucular and tendon issue. Thomas is a superb physio, knows his business expertise well, and is a great guy. Highly recommended.Posted on Kate Oakley15/01/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've been treated by Sergio Campos for several years now as different needs have arisen and think he is the top of his profession. I've seen him most recently for bursitis of the shoulder where he treated me with a mix of sports massage, dry needling and exercises. This combination meant I could keep exercising, which as a Personal Trainer is key, but safely and whilst healing. He has also successfully treated my teenage son for an acute groin injury where others had failed. My son was delighted to be back playing football several times a week in a no time. Sergio is warm, empathetic, clear in the plan and takes a holistic approach to treatment. Couldn't recommend him more highly.Posted on Andi Georgiou18/12/2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Friendly and professional "My physio Sergio was friendly and professional. He helped me to understand the causes of my problem in my neck and hip area and what I could do to alleviate the pain". Plus he gave me various exercises that I could carry out at home that helped tremendously.Posted on N P12/12/2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I saw Sergio for my cubital nerve syndrome. He was really helpful, provided excellent advice and support and helped me get stronger. Highly recommend Sergio and Physio Fitness !Posted on Douglas Crawford10/12/2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have been using Sergio Campos at Physio Fitness for several years. My son plays lots of football and he has been excellent in treating a variety of injuries/ conditions over that time: from knee to neck and back. He has a great manner with children. He has also greatly helped recovery with a combination of physio, sports massage, ultra-sound treatment, exercises both in a treatment room and in the adjoining gym. In the rare case where he feels physiotherapy will not solve a condition, he quickly will refer on to a doctor or consultant as appropriate.Posted on Joshua Blatt10/12/2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I started with Sergio just after my knee surgery in April 2024. To date the recovery has been going well with good progress. There is still some way to go as it’s a lengthy process, but Sergio has been there every step of the way and without him, I would be months behind schedule. It certainly helps that he has had the same injury as me. FY I tore my ACL and had to have full knee reconstruction including ligaments on both sides of the knee and a hamstring graft. Sergio has helped me with a mixture of treatment room and gym-based activities. He has set exercise programmes and targets to enable me to push the recovery forward as quickly and safely as possible. Sergio has time and again shown extra care and attention when setting tasks to be completed in between sessions. When I travel, he makes sure I have videos of the exercises so that I can copy them in my own time. He goes above and beyond to make sure I am making the necessary progress, and equally is not afraid to tell me if I need to brush up on something or pay special attention to a set of exercises for a period of time. I would without doubt recommend Sergio, and I have done several times already to both family and friends.Posted on Simon Gough06/12/2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Would highly recommend Sergio Campos who has treated me for nerve pain caused by a prolapsed disc.Posted on Alfie05/12/2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Sergio is a brilliant physio. Sergio has treated me on a number of injuries for almost a decade. His knowledge and instinct have been truly impressive. I am currently recovering from a sports related groin injury, and Sergio’s various treatment methods, combined with progressive rehab plans, continue to help massively. As a professional footballer, not only have I found his abilities on par with (and better than) other experts within elite sport, but he is a fantastic guy who has treated both my Dad and younger sister. They have been equally appreciative of his talent and warmth.Posted on Max Kasriel05/12/2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have been seeing Sergio Campos following my Achilles tendon rupture for about five months and I am very happy with the progress that has been made. Sergio has a great attitude - he is positive, enthusiastic and very responsive to questions (including by email). He has laid out a very clear and manageable programme for me to follow which has delivered great results. Would thoroughly recommend.
